As a part of E-Praja Kirana CSR initiative of E-WIS, the book donation and scholarship program was held at Mirisawetiya Temple, Anuradhapura recently. E-WIS one of the premier information technology companies in Sri Lanka carries out many CSR activities in this nature and this is one such activity they organize annually as a part of their CSR vision “Eliminating barriers between urban and rural”.
Nearly 150 high performing but under-privileged students were selected from the Anuradhapura region to be facilitated by this program. School books and equipment for a year have been donated to these students. Foot cycles were also donated to those who travel long distance to get to their schools.
This program is organized under the guidance of the Mirisawetiya Temple. Ven. Eethalawatunuwawe Gnanathilake Thero who is closely working with E-WIS on this project stated that; “Companies which strive hard to achieve business objectives should be the ones to develop and uplift rural areas. E-WIS has undertaken this responsibility since its early days and is working towards creating a better tomorrow for children in rural regions such as Anurahapura”.
This project took place in the presence of Chief incumbent of Mirisawetiya temple Ven. Eethalawatunuwawe Gnanathilake Thero, Chief incumbent of Ruwanmali Maha Temple Ven. Kalashuri Pallegama Somarathana, Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, Ven. Dr. Pallegama Rathanasara Thero, The Minister of parliament Mr. Wijedasa Rajapakse, the Chairman of E-WIS Group, Mr. Sanjeewa Wickramanayake, DIG of North Central province Mr. Pathirana, SF commander of Anuradhapura district Major General Sanath Karunarathne, Base commander of Sri Lanka Air force-Anuradhapura Sagara Kotakadeniya and Government Agent of Kandy Mr. Gotabhaya Jayarathne.
Being the only IT Company in Sri Lanka to affiliate with United Nations Global Compact, E-WIS adheres to the best international practices in their operations including social responsibility. A considerable portion of company’s funds are invested in E-Praja Kirana CSR activities.
The Chairman of E-WIS Group, Mr. Sanjeewa Wickramanayake added “All the CSR activities of E-WIS are geared towards developing rural communities especially with the aid of technology. This is to prevent brain drain from rural to urban and to develop rural villages which will eventually result in equivalent development across all parts of the country. Our objective is to see a technology rich Sri Lanka while preserving our traditions and culture”
This program took place for the sixth consecutive year. Up to now E-WIS has offered scholarships to more than 1000 students to continue their higher studies. IT training, IT equipment and job opportunities have also been provided in this region.
Being a socially responsible entity, E-WIS believes that information and education is the key to success, rather that just providing necessities. With this motive, E-WIS has donated computers to 136 schools which have never been provided with Computers before. Recently, a fully equipped computer centre was donated to the Pallewela MV of Monaragala district which is located in Siyambalanduwa, the poorest electorate in Sri Lanka.
Currently, E-WIS has also joined hands with the E-villages project intiated by the Ministry of Education under the Mahinda Chinthana Socio-Economic development program of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse and with the guidance of the Presidential Secretariat. E-WIS is the ICT facilitator of the project in both infrastructure and knowledge aspects. Setting up five (05) e-villages have been undertaken as the first phase of the program and the first village is planned to be opened late this month.
Being the pioneer in introducing latest in Information Technology to Sri Lanka, carrying more than 22 years of experience, E-WIS will carry out its CSR initiatives in order to open information gate ways to the Sri Lankan rural community, which will result in sustainable development in the long run.
