EWIS once again managed to enter the STING Corporate Accountability index 2010 due to its ethical and transparent stance in the Sri Lankan Corporate world. This time, they have been rated in the class “Gold”. This index reflects a holistic approach to CSR, sustainability and governance and also is a report card on ethical and transparency standing of Sri Lankan Corporates.
Mr. Sanjeewa Wickramanayake, Chairman/ CEO E-WIS group of companies stated “We are very serious about our commitment to the society. Our initiative to empower rural youth dates back to 80s where CSR was not a hot topic then. Our prime objective in CSR is to eliminate domestic brain drain from rural to urban by empowering rural communities with skills, knowledge and facilities.”
Under this initiative, EWIS has carried out many activities together with state authorities and NGOs to facilitate rural communities with ICT related skill and infrastructure developments. Their latest undertaking is outsourcing software developments to developers recruited at regional level. Already they have recruited people from Kandy and Galle and they are remotely working for several significant projects.
“We have given them the required resources and training. It is a good opportunity for them to earn experience by getting involved in significant and large scale projects. Some said that this could be a risky and may be a costly move. But I am very much confident that we can bring this vision to life. The era where people were forced to leave their home towns and move to Colombo should come to an end” says Mr. Wickramanayake.
EWIS is very much interested and geared towards their eco-friendly initiative “Green is a shade of blue”. Under this initiative, they are seeking greener shades in their Corporate “blue” with many eco-friendly projects in place. EWIS has already introduced many eco-friendly options for customers such as energy efficient technologies, recycled paper based printing etc. With all these hard work, EWIS is expecting to pioneer the national ICT sector towards an eco-friendly platform. EWIS proudly states that they are the first ICT Company in Sri Lanka to obtain the e-waste management license. Since 2006, EWIS together with their international business partner Lexmark is working on an initiative to recycle cartridges.
Being the one and only ICT Company in Sri Lanka to affiliate with the globally accepted principles United Nations Global Compact is a credential of their commitment towards being an accountable corporate citizen in the corporate world.
“This success of ours is attributed to the great faith our stakeholders had in us. While thanking them, we are very much interested in providing them with many eco-friendly options which will support them to be sustainable. With commitment and passion, we have proved to all our stake holders that they can look forward to improving sustainable relationships and partnerships with us to accomplish greater missions together in future.” Mr. Wickramanayake concluded.
